New seismic monitoring center in South America to assess the liquefaction risk posed by subduction earthquakes

Abstract The east of Cali is composed loose sand deposits with high water table levels. This condition and the seismic hazard city make cyclic liquefaction one main hazards in city, which may affect more than 600,000 citizens important infrastructures such as city’s drinking treatment plants. Therefore, it was decided to design implement a monitoring center study behavior liquefiable soils under local seismogenic conditions, subduction earthquakes predominate. First, 130 from two centers layers USA were studied determine requirements for adequate center. Then, robust geotechnical characterization area including SPT, CPTu, ambient noise tests carried out. From this information, specifications location instruments and, general, characteristics defined. has been planned be established stages, first already built commissioned. implementation stage allowed adequately record 35 different sources, most them earthquakes, verify that potentially layer remains saturated throughout year. Subsequent ground motion sensors will allow deeply understand large shear strains excess pore pressures generation soil deposit, well their relationships intensity measures. experience shared herein can benefit design, construction, operation other across world.
